Lafayette Square

Lafayette Square is an urban oasis in the heart of Buffalo, New York. It’s a destination for locals and out-of-towners alike, a place where they can take their mind off the hustle and bustle of city life. A perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or walk your dog, Lafayette Square is home to a number of local businesses that are worth checking out – even if you’re not in the area for business. So what exactly is Lafayette Square? Is it the same as Washington Square? It’s both! Washington Square was Lafayette Square’s predecessor – but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of unique things about this little slice of heaven.

Many people who visit Buffalo are unfamiliar with Lafayette Square. The city center is a thriving hub of businesses, restaurants, and civic events. Lafayette Square is part of Buffalo’s original urban plan, laid out in 1804. Several important civic structures are located on the eastern edge of the Square, including the Erie County Courthouse and Erie County Public Library. In 1848, Martin Van Buren won the Free Soil Party nomination and, a few years later, Abraham Lincoln spoke on the square.

There is a Soldiers and Sailors Monument in the heart of the Square. The monument is now a ruined memorial after being damaged by trolley tracks, automobiles, and public toilets. This historical monument was a focal point for war bond rallies, as troops marched around it on their way to fight in all subsequent wars. The Soldiers & Sailors Monument was in Buffalo, and was the site of many important events throughout the city.

If you’re in the mood for a long walk in one of Buffalo’s most popular parks, take a stroll through Washington Square Park. Once you’re in the park, you’ll see that Lafayette Square is itself a part of the park. It’s a beautiful, relatively quiet place to walk your dog or sit and read a book. If you’re looking for a spot worth visiting alone, or you want to treat your friends to a meal out, Bresca is the place. Easily one of the top 10 best restaurants in the country according to Food & Wine Magazine, Bresca is a destination in itself. You can dine on amazing French cuisine, or indulge in comfort food like bison meatloaf or pork chops.

If you’re in the mood for some wholesome fun, take the kids to Lafayette Square’s Playland for some fresh air and amusement park fun. There are four different play areas at Lafayette Square featuring everything from slides to luge runs, and there are even rides for the grownups (and kids) as well.

If you’re in the mood for a long drive, take the kids on a tour of South Buffalo. You can tour the city via boat, go on a tour of the city’s art and architecture, or take a drive around the city and parkland.

If you’re looking for a unique way to explore South Buffalo, or you just feel like being lost, take a stroll through the alleys and passageways of South Great Plains. Once you’re in the park, everything seems to change – from the bustling city of Buffalo to the pastoral landscape.
